Market Discrimination Most Common in Hiring and Pay

A survey conducted by the Commission for Protection against Discrimination (CPD) involving 592 respondents revealed that 53.7% reported experiencing some form of discrimination. The CPD analyzed manifestations of economic discrimination across several sectors during November–December 2024. In the labor market, discrimination was reported concerning hiring (47.8%), compensation (33.1%), and receiving additional benefits (32.6%).

Respondents also noted issues with working conditions (26.1%) and opportunities for career development (31.2%). The study indicated that older workers (53.8%) and ethnic minorities (50.4%) were among the groups most affected by discrimination. Beyond employment, the CPD found that discrimination occurs when accessing essential services; 36.5% reported issues with healthcare, education, and social care.

Other areas of concern included pricing of goods/services (27.2%), public procurement (27.9%), and interactions with financial institutions (25.4%). Regarding the causes, 51.4% of respondents cited the imposition of negative perceptions as the primary source of discrimination. The CPD highlighted that the lack of information was cited by 43.7% as a leading contributing factor.

The CPD recommended strengthening equality regulations, implementing regular monitoring, and launching public awareness campaigns to combat these issues. The commission noted that the proceedings for protection from discrimination are free of charge.
