Sofia Leader Slams Mladost Property Deal as Corrupt

Spasi Sofia Chair Boris Bonev described a proposed development report for the Mladost district of Sofia as “among the most scandalous and corrupt decisions.” Bonev stated that the proposal involves constructing a 22-story building featuring nearly 60,000 square meters of gross floor area. He alleged that the matter represents a significant corruption deal being advanced “quietly and smoothly,” contrary to the public interest. Bonev expressed concern that the plan would allow such a large structure to be built at a busy intersection within the Mladost area.

He asserted that the project embodies “22 storeys of corruption” visible across Sofia and one that residents of Mladost would likely oppose. He reminded attendees that local voters have historically supported politicians who promise to limit overdevelopment, not those who encourage it. Additionally, Spasi Sofia municipal councillor and architect Rositsa Nikolova argued that the report should be postponed or rejected.

Nikolova highlighted that the Sofia Municipality owns 92% of the property, suggesting that the municipality should dictate the terms for any future development. Bonev criticized political factions expected to support the proposal, as well as Mayor Vassil Terziev, for not publicly addressing the issue. He noted that the submitted report largely duplicates a proposal from a previous term, which had been withdrawn following public outcry despite the backing of a majority party.

Bonev concluded by criticizing the current governance environment, suggesting it allows for improper actions.
