The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, a joint effort by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, is set to open at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday.
This display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The exhibition features an extensive collection of over 130 historical documents. These materials—including protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates—detail the preparation, course, suppression, and subsequent consequences of the uprising.
Furthermore, the collection offers insights into the international response to the events. The inclusion of Ottoman documents provides a unique perspective from both local and central Ottoman authorities regarding the period. Prominent figures of the era, such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov, are represented among the document authors.
The exhibit showcases both widely recognized and lesser-known historical records, tracing the events across various revolutionary districts and highlighting the role of the Bulgarian emigre community alongside the global reaction to the conflict. The exhibition was formally inaugurated in Sofia on April 20, under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and with financial support from the Ministry of Culture. The display serves as a significant historical resource, providing depth to the understanding of this pivotal moment in Bulgarian history.
