Cultural Centre in Skopje to Host Exhibition Marking 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, has opened at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje.

The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The comprehensive cultural exhibit features over 130 primary documents, including protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates. These materials provide detailed documentation of the preparation, progression, suppression, and aftermath of the April Uprising.

The collection offers diverse perspectives, incorporating international responses to the conflict alongside Ottoman documents that illuminate the viewpoints of both local and central Ottoman authorities. Among the documented figures are prominent historical personalities such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The exhibition showcases a mix of well-known and previously unseen documents, tracing the revolutionary events across various districts and highlighting the role played by the Bulgarian emigre community and the international community.

The exhibition was previously inaugurated in Sofia on April 20, held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and supported financially by the Ministry of Culture. The presentation aims to provide a thorough historical account of this pivotal period in Bulgarian history.
