The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, has opened at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje.
The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The exhibit features a collection of over 130 historical documents, encompassing protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates. These materials provide comprehensive documentation regarding the preparation, progression, suppression, and subsequent consequences of the uprising.
Furthermore, the documents offer insights into the international reaction to the events, while included Ottoman records shed light on the perspectives held by both local and central Ottoman authorities. Among the signatories and subjects of the displayed materials are prominent historical figures, including Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The exhibition showcases a mix of well-known and previously unrevealed documents, tracing the scope of the revolutionary districts and detailing the role of the Bulgarian emigre community alongside the international response.
The historical significance of the display underscores its role in preserving national memory. The event was formally inaugurated in Sofia on April 20, held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and supported financially by the Ministry of Culture. This major cultural undertaking allows the public to examine primary sources detailing a pivotal moment in Bulgarian history.
