Cultural Centre in Skopje to Host Exhibition Marking 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, commenced on Tuesday at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje.

The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The exhibition features a collection exceeding 130 historical documents, including protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates. These materials provide comprehensive insight into the period, detailing the preparation, the progression, the suppression, and the subsequent consequences of the uprising.

Furthermore, the collection sheds light on the international reaction to the events, incorporating Ottoman documents that offer perspectives from both the local and central Ottoman authorities. Prominent figures of the era, such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov, are represented among the document authors. The exhibit presents a mix of well-known and previously unseen materials, tracing the events across all revolutionary districts and highlighting the role of the Bulgarian emigre community and global response.

The exhibition was previously inaugurated in Sofia on April 20, under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and with financial support from the Ministry of Culture. The display serves as a significant cultural resource, documenting the depth of the national struggle and its lasting impact on the region.
