The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, opened at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday.
The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, providing extensive documentation of the pivotal historical event. The exhibition features a collection exceeding 130 primary source documents, including protocols, personal letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates. These materials comprehensively illustrate the stages of the uprising—from its preparation and course to its suppression and lasting consequences.
A significant aspect of the display is its breadth of perspective, incorporating not only accounts of the revolutionary period but also Ottoman documents that offer insight into the viewpoints of both local and central Ottoman authorities. The documents are authored by prominent historical figures such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The collection presents a mix of well-known and previously unseen materials, tracing the events across various revolutionary districts and highlighting the critical role of the Bulgarian emigre community and the international community’s reaction to the conflict.
The exhibition underscores the profound cultural importance of the period, offering a detailed look at the struggle for national identity. The event was previously inaugurated in Sofia on April 20, held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and with financial backing from the Ministry of Culture. The curated display serves as a major archival resource for understanding this defining chapter in Bulgarian history.
