During his address at the Delphi Economic Forum, the EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, addressed the current energy challenges facing the continent. He confirmed that the European Union maintains sufficient reserves of aviation fuel, stating that emergency stocks could sustain operations for a period of up to three months. Tzitzikostas suggested that the recent cancellations of flights by certain airlines are primarily correlated with escalating fuel prices rather than actual supply deficiencies.
He characterized the ongoing energy crisis as unprecedented in scope and cautioned that the coming summer period is expected to be challenging. Furthermore, the Commissioner voiced concern regarding the potential global ramifications if the conflict in the Middle East does not reach a swift resolution. On the security front, Tzitzikostas highlighted the EU’s military mobility plan, which involves the modernization of 500 strategically vital sites across Europe.
Economically, he forecasted a notable decline in tourist arrivals originating from Asia destined for Europe. The Delphi Forum, which continues through Saturday, April 25, serves as a major international gathering. It features over 200 discussions and panels involving approximately 1,200 speakers.
Participants represent governments, academia, international organizations, and the business sector, focusing their discussions on geopolitical shifts, economic trends, and technological transformations.
