The European Union possesses sufficient reserves of aviation fuel and has the capacity to activate emergency stocks for a period extending up to three months, stated Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, at the Delphi Economic Forum. Addressing the energy crisis, Tzitzikostas suggested that the flight cancellations reported by some airlines are more directly linked to escalating fuel prices rather than actual supply shortages. He characterized the current energy situation as historically significant and predicted a challenging summer period ahead.
Furthermore, the Commissioner warned that prolonged instability in the Middle East could lead to severe global repercussions. In a separate discussion, Tzitzikostas highlighted the EU’s military mobility plan, which involves modernizing approximately 500 strategically important sites across the continent. Economically, he forecasted a notable downturn in tourist arrivals originating from Asia heading to Europe.
