The 52nd National Assembly of Bulgaria convened on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. The opening session was conducted by the oldest National Representative in attendance, Rumen Milanov, an MP from Progressive Bulgaria, who was 78 years old. Addressing the assembled legislature, Milanov outlined two primary objectives for the body: reinforcing the rule of law and maintaining domestic peace.
Following the address, Milanov administered the oath to the 240 lawmakers. The oath requires representatives to swear, “I do swear in the name of the Republic of Bulgaria that I will observe the Constitution and the laws of the land and will be guided in all my actions by the interests of the people. I have sworn to it.” After the oath was administered, the Bulgarian national anthem and the anthem of Europe were played within the debating chamber.
During the playing of the Ode to Joy, members of the Vazrazhdane faction remained seated. All participating MPs were subsequently required to sign the oath documentation and submit it to the administration. The proceedings marked the formal start of the new national assembly session in Bulgaria.
