Gabriela Naplatanova, Chair of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM), asserted that only strong and independent journalism possesses the capacity to hold governing bodies accountable for their decisions. Speaking at the opening of the regulator’s first meeting of her second term, Naplatanova urged journalists to uphold professional ethical standards and diligently protect the dignity of their profession. During her address, she thanked the regulator members for their trust, acknowledging that each member’s experience contributes significantly to the Council’s work.
Naplatanova outlined the CEM’s future direction, stating the body will remain open to society, journalistic organizations, the media industry, and academia, and will actively encourage initiatives aimed at enhancing media content quality. She clarified that the regulator’s role is primarily supportive, emphasizing that the core responsibility for the state of the media environment rests with journalists and creative professionals. Naplatanova cautioned that mere declarations or statements are insufficient safeguards for freedom of speech or journalistic autonomy.
She underlined that only strong and independent media can help society develop critical thinking skills and make informed decisions regarding its future. While noting that the regulator members’ roles are temporary, she stressed that efforts to protect the media environment must be continuous. Naplatanova assumed the role of CEM Chair on April 28, with her term set to conclude on April 27, 2027.
Her appointment followed her election on April 23, where she was nominated by Simona Veleva and Kadrinka Kadrinova.
