Regulator Head: Only Strong, Independent Journalism Can Hold Power Accountable

Gabriela Naplatanova, Chair of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM), asserted that only strong and independent journalism can hold those in power accountable for their decisions. Speaking on Thursday at the opening of the regulator’s first meeting of her second term, Naplatanova urged journalists to maintain professional ethical standards and vigorously protect the dignity of their profession. She expressed gratitude to the regulator members for their trust, noting that each member’s experience is a valuable contribution to the Council’s work.

Looking ahead, Naplatanova stated that the CEM will remain accessible to society, journalistic organizations, the media industry, and academia, and will promote initiatives designed to improve the quality of media content. Naplatanova emphasized that the regulator’s role is fundamentally supportive, asserting that the primary responsibility for the media environment rests with journalists and creative professionals. She cautioned that mere declarations or statements are insufficient to guarantee freedom of speech or journalistic independence.

She stressed that only strong and independent media can assist society in developing critical thinking skills and making informed decisions regarding its future. While the members’ roles within the CEM are temporary, she underscored that efforts to safeguard the media environment must be continuous. Naplatanova was elected Chair on April 23, nominated by Simona Veleva and Kadrinka Kadrinova, and her term commenced on April 28, running until April 27, 2027.

  1. It is reassuring to hear such a strong commitment to journalistic independence from the regulator.
