Bulgarians Say Transition to Euro Is Smooth, Eurobarometer Finds

A recent Eurobarometer survey indicates that a majority of Bulgarians (62%) perceive the transition from the lev to the euro as proceeding smoothly. Regarding the adoption of the European currency, 49% of respondents view it positively for Bulgaria, while 43% hold the opposing view. Furthermore, a significant majority (67%) believe the euro benefits the European Union as a whole.

When considering economic stability, 66% of Bulgarians anticipate that the euro will lead to increased inflation, contrasting with 21% who expect it to help maintain price stability. On a personal level, 46% anticipate a positive impact, compared to 42% who foresee negative consequences. In a separate report concerning Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area, the European Commission advises that Bulgarian authorities maintain intensive price monitoring.

This monitoring should focus on ensuring correct price display, restricting unwarranted price hikes, and enforcing consumer protection and competition laws. The Commission suggests that such price monitoring must be both intensive and sustained during future enlargements. The report also recommends considering voluntary business conduct guidelines and extending the dual pricing period to a full year.

For best practices during the transition, the Commission suggests that new euro area members could follow Bulgaria’s example by issuing coin rolls of various denominations instead of “starter kits.” The findings underscore that robust communication and public awareness campaigns are crucial elements for ensuring a smooth transition for Bulgarians.
