PM, MPs Share Expectations of New Parliament

MPs and party leaders addressed journalists regarding their expectations for the inaugural session of Bulgaria’s 52nd National Assembly, focusing on the selection of the Assembly Chair and the formation of a new cabinet. Rumen Radev, leader of the Progressive Bulgaria (PB) coalition, stated that the government structure should be finalized by May 15 to address numerous pending reforms. Radev identified the state’s finances as a primary concern for his group, alongside the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council.

Regarding leadership, Radev noted the possibility of him assuming the prime minister role, while anticipating Petar Vitanov as the PB floor leader. He stated that dismantling the “oligarchic model” within government and the judiciary would be a complex, ongoing process. Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov expressed his belief that the incoming government must maintain momentum, urging MPs to act with principle, referencing public demands that led to the previous cabinet’s resignation.

He asserted that the caretaker period demonstrated Bulgaria’s capacity for governance without the “Borissov-Peevski model.”

Other leaders shared their priorities. Galab Donev of PB announced that his group would nominate a Chair of the Assembly. Tomislav Donchev of GERB-UDF highlighted cabinet formation and the 2026 budget as key tasks, suggesting their group could form a constitutional majority on beneficial proposals.

Ivaylo Mirchev of Yes, Bulgaria noted that despite internal changes, the elected MPs would remain united. Assen Vassilev of CC stressed the urgent election of the Supreme Judicial Council, while Atanas Atanassov of Democrats for Strong Bulgaria vowed to monitor power holders and advocate for reforms.
