Journalists Helped Shape Impact of April Uprising, Journalist Boyko Vassilev Says

At a conference held in Panagyurishte to mark the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, journalist Boyko Vassilev discussed the pivotal role played by three journalists in the movement’s success, an event that ultimately contributed to the Russo-Turkish War and Bulgaria’s liberation. The conference, organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), featured Vassilev, host of the Panorama program on Bulgarian National Television. Vassilev identified Zahari Stoyanov, credited with documenting both the positive and negative aspects of Bulgaria’s destiny; Hristo Botev, who publicized the capture of the ship Radetzky and the subsequent impact of his death across Europe; and Januarius MacGahan, who exposed the atrocities occurring in Bulgaria to an international audience.

“Words are truthful when they speak of both light and shadow,” Vassilev stated. He cited a powerful passage from Stoyanov’s writings, describing Georgi Benkovski observing the burning of Panagyurishte and the deaths of his associates, yet maintaining that his objective had already been achieved, illustrating the moral weight of leadership amid tragedy. Addressing the BTA’s conference series, Vassilev clarified that the discussions are intended as conversations connecting historical events to contemporary Bulgarian life.

He noted that the uprising continues to raise questions pertinent to the nation’s current public discourse. Furthermore, Vassilev observed that even during the 50th anniversary commemoration, Bulgarian society displayed significant divisions, offering a warning he deemed relevant today. He concluded that the April Uprising represents an “eternal political Bulgaria that we continue to see.”
