The 2026 motorcycle season officially commenced in Sofia with a ceremony held in Alexander Nevsky Square on Saturday. The opening event included a water blessing ritual led by Father Kostadin, who emphasized the importance of tolerance among all road users. Dozens of motorcyclists proceeded along central city boulevards toward the Boyana area.
Lyubomir Zhingov, a representative from the Sofia Motorcyclists Association, addressed journalists, noting the return of riders to the road as the weather improved. Zhingov stressed the paramount importance of adherence to the Road Traffic Act and maintaining appropriate speeds for all participants. He highlighted that the current state of Bulgaria’s road infrastructure may contribute to traffic accidents, necessitating increased caution from all drivers and motorcycle operators.
Beyond safety protocols, the association raised concerns regarding the insurance requirements for the motorcycle community. They argued that mandatory year-round third-party liability insurance may be excessive, given that motorcycles are primarily used during warmer months. In response to these concerns, the Sofia Motorcyclists Association is scheduled to meet next week with representatives from the Financial Supervision Commission, with the national ombudsman also expected to attend.
The event underscored a renewed focus on safety and compliance as the motorcycle season kicks off across the road network.
