2, 1974: Fashion Show in Ruse Presents 300 New Models

On May 2, 1974, a fashion show took place in Ruse, held along the Danube River, as documented by preserved archives from the BTA. The event featured 300 new models presented by several prominent Bulgarian manufacturing enterprises, including the fashion houses Boriana (Cherven Bryag), Arda (Ruse), Sanya (Pleven), Burya (Gabrovo), Druzhba (Varna), Mizia (Pleven), and Bulgaria in Plovdiv. One of the photographs from the day captures the young pop singer Tanya Emilova performing for the audience.

The textile and fashion industry in the People’s Republic of Bulgaria (1946–1989) operated under state ownership and central planning. Manufacturing efforts were directed toward mass production for both the domestic market and for export to other Eastern Bloc (Comecon) nations, with the Soviet Union being a primary recipient. The participating companies had established histories.

The iconic clothing manufacturer Arda, based in Ruse, was founded in 1932, and by 1968, it opened a newly constructed factory building in the city center. Boriana was established in 1968. Furthermore, the conceptual expansion project for the Sanya textile factory in Pleven had received approval from the Council of Ministers of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria in 1972, while Mizia was founded in 1960.

This 1974 fashion show in Ruse serves as a historical snapshot of the state-managed Bulgarian fashion industry during that period.
