Crafts Three-Metre Replica of Giro d’Italia Trophy for Third Stage of Race

A replica of the Giro d’Italia trophy is being constructed in Plovdiv to mark the third stage of the cycling race. According to Plovdiv 2019 Foundation Executive Director Kiril Velchev, the steel installation will be positioned at the roundabout on Maritsa-Yug Boulevard, near the Water Palace, along the race route. The replica is being produced by the artists Nedyalka Mitkova and Dimitar Mitkov.

The creators noted that replicating the original trophy proved challenging due to its highly complex, distinctive, and recognizable shape. Known as the “Trofeo Senza Fine” (Endless Trophy), the original design features a spiral ribbon that rises upward and narrows, resembling an hourglass. Nedyalka Mitkova stated that creating this historical piece was a significant honor and responsibility.

The team utilized stainless steel for the installation, ensuring it would withstand various weather conditions while allowing for a polished effect reminiscent of the original cup. The main replica portion is approximately three metre high. The total structure will stand at 4.5 metre, including a metal pedestal engraved with the year the Giro passed through the city and the Plovdiv logo.

The entire structure is estimated to weigh around 1.5 tonnes, and spotlights will be installed at the base to illuminate the trophy at night. Upon completion, the piece will be toned to match the original bronze color. BTA has also launched a dedicated section, “Giro d’Italia 2026 – Cycling in Bulgaria,” providing coverage for the three stages scheduled to take place in the country from May 8 to 10, 2026.
