Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova visited Yerevan this week, meeting with Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan as part of her participation in the Eighth Summit of the European Political Community. During discussions with President Khachaturyan, the two leaders focused on strengthening bilateral ties. President Iotova emphasized the European Political Community’s role in enhancing connectivity across Europe.
Khachaturyan affirmed that Bulgaria’s successful European integration model could assist Armenia. Discussions covered expanding cooperation in energy, economy, culture, tourism, high technology, and artificial intelligence. Separately, President Iotova met with Prime Minister Pashinyan, resulting in the signing of a Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership.
The leaders noted the strong political dialogue and identified untapped potential for developing relations in the areas of economy, energy, security, and defense. Pashinyan expressed gratitude for Bulgaria’s support of Armenian cultural identity, to which Iotova reaffirmed Bulgaria’s commitment, drawing on its EU membership experience, to assist Armenia’s path toward deeper European integration. The visit also included a cultural visit to a school in Yerevan.
President Iotova paid respects to the literary legacy of Bulgarian poet Peyo Yavorov and announced plans to establish a sixth Armenian school in Bulgaria. At the EPC Summit, President Iotova is scheduled to address energy connectivity, specifically concerning the Vertical Gas Corridor. Throughout her time in Yerevan, the focus remained on reinforcing deep historical ties and advancing strategic cooperation between the two nations.
