Medical Academy Acquires New Equipment for Air Medical Evacuation

The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has acquired new, high-specification equipment, significantly expanding its capacity for air medical evacuation of critically ill and injured patients, according to the hospital’s press centre. Five complete sets of advanced gear were purchased, which include vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, defibrillators, and suction pumps. These systems are designed to maintain intensive care and resuscitation readiness throughout long-distance transport.

With this new equipment, the MMA can conduct simultaneous air evacuations for up to five critically ill patients who require continuous monitoring and highly specialized treatment during flight. The purchased gear is certified for onboard aircraft use and can be installed immediately, ensuring a rapid response capability during emergencies. The Military Medical Academy is noted as the sole hospital in Bulgaria that combines specialized equipment with trained teams for air medical evacuation.

In coordination with the Bulgarian Air Force, the MMA’s teams are prepared to respond to mass disasters, accidents, and military conflicts that necessitate the rapid evacuation and stabilization of numerous casualties. Prof Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at MMA, stated that this equipment substantially enhances the academy’s ability to provide medical care in extreme conditions. He emphasized that air medical evacuation requires not only advanced technology but also highly trained teams capable of operating in dynamic, high-risk environments.

The academy maintains high operational readiness through regular training flights simulating various challenging scenarios, improving coordination between its medical and aviation structures.
