The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has significantly upgraded its capacity for air medical evacuation following the acquisition of new, high-specification medical equipment. The MMA’s press center announced the purchase of five complete sets of advanced gear, which includes vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, and defibrillators. This new equipment is designed to sustain intensive care and resuscitation readiness during extended transport periods.
With these additions, the MMA is now equipped to conduct the simultaneous air evacuation of up to five critically ill patients who require continuous, specialized monitoring during flight. The systems are certified for onboard aircraft use and can be integrated immediately, ensuring a rapid response capability during emergencies. The MMA remains the sole hospital in Bulgaria that combines specialized medical equipment with highly trained teams dedicated to air medical evacuation.
In close coordination with the Bulgarian Air Force, its personnel are prepared to respond to large-scale incidents, including mass disasters, accidents, and military conflicts requiring the rapid stabilization and evacuation of numerous casualties. According to Prof Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at the academy, this equipment substantially enhances the ability to deliver care in extreme environments. He noted that effective air medical evacuation depends not only on technology but also on highly trained teams capable of operating within dynamic, high-risk settings.
The MMA maintains operational readiness through regular training flights simulating various challenging scenarios, thereby improving coordination between its medical staff and aviation structures.
