Accident Numbers Down in First Months of 2026, Says Labour Inspectorate Executive Director

By mid-April 2026, General Labour Inspectorate Executive Director Ekaterina Asenova reported a decline in the overall number of workplace accidents. Statistics indicate that 126 workplace accidents were reported to date, representing a decrease from the 157 recorded during the same period in 2025. Fatal workplace accidents dropped to 26, down from 36 in the corresponding period of 2025.

Non-traumatic fatal incidents also showed a reduction, with 14 cases reported compared to 19 in the previous year. Asenova noted that occupational safety rules could prevent 90% of workplace accidents. She reminded the public that primary causes include falls from height, being trapped, crushing injuries, and objects striking workers.

As of mid-April 2026, the high-risk sectors remain construction, crop and livestock farming, metal product manufacturing (excluding machinery and equipment), and trade. Increased inspection efforts in construction have positively impacted safety, reducing reported accidents from 12 by mid-April 2025 to six in April 2026. Furthermore, land transport registered a significant decrease in accidents, reporting zero incidents so far in 2026, compared to four accidents, including one fatality, in 2025.

The Director stressed that employers bear full responsibility for ensuring safe working environments.
