Aquaculture Production Reaches 1 Mln Tonnes in 2024

According to the latest data from Eurostat, the European Union’s aquaculture sector saw a total farmed volume of 1 million tonnes of fish, molluscs, algae, and crustaceans in 2024, valued at EUR 4.6 billion. This figure represents a contraction in both volume and value when compared to 2023, with reductions of 3.7% and 3.6%, respectively. The overall EU aquaculture production was significantly concentrated among five member states.

Spain led the output with 246,137 tonnes, accounting for 24.3% of the total. This was followed by France (181,434 tonnes; 17.9%), Greece (127,493 tonnes; 12.6%), Italy (98,051 tonnes; 9.7%), and Poland (43,554 tonnes; 4.3%). Bulgaria contributed 11,429 tonnes, representing 1.14% of the EU total.

Analyzing the composition of the farmed output reveals a distinction between sheer weight and monetary value. In terms of live weight, mussels constituted nearly one-third of the total production at 32.8%, followed by trout (17.2%) and gilthead seabream (10.0%). However,
