, Bulgaria and Continue the Change Divided over Idea of Deeper Unity

Disagreements surfaced on Monday among the parties comprising the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) coalition regarding the feasibility of deeper political unity in Bulgaria. Yes, Bulgaria has intensified its push to formalize its existing informal cooperation with Continue the Change (CC) and Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) into a unified political entity. However, CC stated that the parties are not close to merging into a single party despite sharing common objectives.

Bozhidar Bozhanov, co-leader of Yes, Bulgaria, emphasized that the focus remains on shared voter priorities, particularly judicial reform, confirming that dialogue with CC is ongoing. While Bozhanov noted the informal collaboration since February 2023, the discussion has progressed toward formalizing the coalition, potentially leading to full unification. Ivaylo Mirchev, another co-leader of Yes, Bulgaria, supported deeper integration, arguing that a consolidated structure aligns with voter expectations.

In contrast, Nikolay Denkov, former prime minister and CC deputy leader, cautioned against an immediate merger. Denkov stated that while goals are shared, the methods for achieving them differ significantly. “We are very far from becoming one party with Yes, Bulgaria,” he told Nova Television.

He argued that the proposals for either full unification or complete separation are “very extreme.” Denkov clarified that the parties can cooperate while maintaining individual strengths. He confirmed that while cooperation continues in key areas, such as presidential elections, any decision regarding separate parliamentary groups ultimately rests with the individual members of parliament.
