Cabinet members paid respects at the Belene forced labor camp on Monday, marking the 77th anniversary of its establishment, according to the Environment Ministry’s press center. Tributes were offered at the site known as the Second Site on Persin Island. The ceremony was organized by caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Andrey Yankulov and caretaker Environment Minister Julian Popov.
Attendees included caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, caretaker Finance Minister Georgi Klisurski, Chef de Cabinet Rumiana Bachvarova, alongside representatives from the regional administration in Pleven and the leadership of Belene Municipality. The Belene camp, which opened on April 27, 1949, served as Bulgaria’s largest and longest-operating facility for interning opponents of the communist regime. It remained operational, with interruptions, until 1987.
During the event, the assembled members emphasized that preserving the memory of the victims requires a concerted effort from various institutions. Officials noted that procedures are currently underway to formally declare the Belene camp an immovable cultural asset of national significance. The goal of this designation is to ensure the site is maintained as a space for remembrance and education, while also integrating it into the natural setting of Persin Island.
