Bulgarian Passport Issue Launched

The issuance of new Bulgarian passports officially commenced with the opening of the Administrative Services Centre of the Bulgarian Identity Documents Directorate in Sofia’s Mladost 4 borough. Caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev stated that this launch represents the culmination of a project that began in 2022. The new identity document personalization centre implements centralized personalization, which officials report provides a significantly more secure model.

While the processing of applications remains decentralized, the new facility adheres to the highest security standards. Dechev noted that this upgrade not only strengthens national security but also enhances Bulgaria’s international standing. He recalled that the new Bulgarian identity card had previously received recognition as the best in Europe.

Deputy Interior Minister Ivan Anchev confirmed that the centre was built with advanced technological capabilities and will also facilitate electronic identification services. Furthermore, the new Bulgarian passports will feature 48 pages and be valid for ten years, although the existing five-year options will remain available. Regarding costs, Anchev explained that price adjustments are aligned with production costs.

The manufacturing representative, Dr. Stefan Muehlbauer, noted that the development of these systems was a protracted process spanning over a decade. The primary goal was to integrate cutting-edge technologies to ensure the highest level of security for all identity documents produced in Bulgaria.
