Speaking at the opening session of the 52nd National Assembly in Bulgaria, MP Petar Vitanov addressed his colleagues from Progressive Bulgaria, cautioning them regarding the transition from the electoral period to governance. Vitanov warned that the initial enthusiasm surrounding the elections would soon dissipate. He stated that in just a few days, the party would be required to assume the responsibilities of governing, confronting the established state apparatus.
Earlier that day, Rumen Milanov, the most senior MP present, inaugurated the session by administering the oath to the 240 lawmakers. Looking ahead, Vitanov outlined several immediate legislative priorities for Progressive Bulgaria. Key tasks include successfully passing the national budget and resolving outstanding issues concerning the treasury.
Furthermore, curbing market speculation was identified as another critical objective. Beyond immediate fiscal concerns, the MP highlighted the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council and a new prosecutor general as major strategic goals. Vitanov noted that achieving these appointments requires a qualified majority.
While he asserted that Progressive Bulgaria’s support would be essential, he also stressed that the backing of other political parties would be necessary to secure these outcomes for Bulgaria. The political leadership must now shift focus from campaigning to concrete legislative action as the new parliamentary term begins.
