Gianlorenzo Blengini, the head coach of the Bulgarian men’s national volleyball team, encouraged Bulgarians to attend the initial three stages of the Giro d’Italia, which is being held in the country for the first time. The prestigious cycling race begins on May 8 in Nessebar, with the peloton traveling through Burgas, Veliko Tarnovo, and Plovdiv before concluding in Sofia on May 10, after which the race continues in Italy. In an interview, Blengini stated that experiencing the event in person offers a unique perspective unavailable through television viewing.
He also highlighted the significance of the Giro d’Italia to Italy, describing it as a major national sporting representation, symbolized by the iconic pink jersey, and drawing comparisons to the achievements of cycling legends such as Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali. The coach also discussed his personal cycling routine, noting that he has increased his activity levels to maintain fitness due to knee and back concerns, preferring the low-impact nature of the sport. Currently training with the Bulgarian squad in Samokov, Blengini anticipates the Giro peloton will pass through the town during the third stage on May 10.
He expressed interest in allowing the team to observe the elite athletes firsthand. “For us, who are used to being closed inside a gym, it’s interesting to see these professionals with their powerful legs and impressive speed and endurance,” Blengini noted. He concluded that witnessing the spectacle live provides valuable insight into the discipline.
The Italian coach, who previously guided Bulgaria’s team to a World Championship silver medal in September 2025, advised fans to watch the event to fully appreciate its scope.
