Coach Blengini Urges Fans to Watch Giro d’Italia Start in Bulgaria

Italy’s head coach of the Bulgarian men’s national volleyball team, Gianlorenzo Blengini, called on people in Bulgaria in an interview forgiro2026.sofia.bgto watch live the first three stages of the Giro d’Italia, which will be held in the country for the first time at the end of the week. The start of one of cycling’s most prestigious races, Grande Partenza, will begin on May 8 in Nessebar, after which the peloton will pass through Burgas, Veliko Tarnovo and Plovdiv before finishing in Sofia on May 10. The race will then continue in Italy.

“I believe it’s not to be missed. There are things in life that are never repeated. Obviously, you can watch a Start in other places – you don’t have to go to the Moon – but it’s also clear that it will be very, very interesting.

Go and watch, so you can understand what it’s all about. If you’ve never been there in person and have only watched on TV, you will realize how different it is,” Blengini said. “As an Italian, moving to the second part of your question – the Giro is an exceptionally important event, even for those who aren’t die-hard fans of the sport.

Everyone considers it one of the greatest sporting events representing our country to the world. And that iconic pink jersey is a symbol recognized worldwide. We all remember the glory years of the Giro with legends like [Fausto] Coppi and [Gino] Bartali, who remain in the collective memory even of those who never saw them pedal.

It is a specific sport that represents us as a nation, and we are very proud of the Giro. For us, it is an honour,” he added. Blengini said he has been cycling more frequently in recent years.

“Not much in the past. But lately, I’ve started cycling more because I can’t run anymore – my knee and back won’t allow me to lead a normal life if I do. Cycling gives me the opportunity to train without causing injuries.

But I ride gently, without pressure, like a beginner,” he explained. Blengini has been training with the extended Bulgarian national volleyball squad in Samokov since last week. The Giro peloton will pass through the town during the third stage on May 10, and the Italian coach and his players are expected to follow the event.

“Of course, we will find time to be part of this event and watch the Giro pass by. For us, who are used to being closed inside a gym, it’s interesting to see these professionals with their powerful legs and impressive speed and endurance. Until you see it live, you can’t truly understand what it’s all about.

Seeing these people up close gives you a chance to feel what the elite of this sport really represents. It will be very, very interesting, and I’m glad we’ll have the chance to see them in Samokov – a city that is increasingly attracting attention with its sporting events. And not just because the national volleyball team is based there and we prepare for our competitions there,” the Italian coach said.

Blengini led Bulgaria’s men’s national volleyball team to silver medals at the World Championship in September 2025. This website uses cookies. By accepting cookies you can enjoy a better experience while browsing pages.
