Coach Blengini Urges Fans to Watch Giro d’Italia Start in Bulgaria

Gianlorenzo Blengini, the head coach of the Bulgarian men’s national volleyball team, encouraged Bulgarians to attend the first three stages of the Giro d’Italia, which is scheduled to pass through the country for the first time. The prestigious race begins on May 8 in Nessebar, proceeding through Burgas, Veliko Tarnovo, and Plovdiv before concluding in Sofia on May 10, after which the race continues in Italy. In an interview, Blengini advised the public that experiencing the start of such a major cycling event live is a unique opportunity.

Regarding the Giro itself, the coach noted its deep cultural significance in Italy, stating that it is viewed as one of the nation’s most important sporting events globally. He mentioned that the iconic pink jersey and the history involving cycling legends are deeply ingrained in the national memory. Blengini also discussed his personal fitness routine, noting that he has increased his cycling frequency to maintain fitness due to limitations in running.

As the Bulgarian squad trains in Samokov, the town is slated to be on the route during the third stage on May 10. The coach anticipates that the team and he will have the chance to observe the professional cyclists passing through. For Blengini, seeing the elite athletes up close offers a different perspective than watching televised coverage.

He stated that witnessing the speed and endurance of the professionals in Samokov will be an insightful experience for the team. Blengini, who previously guided Bulgaria to silver at the 2025 World Championship, expressed his enthusiasm for the chance to watch the event unfold locally.
