Coach Blengini Urges Fans to Watch Giro d’Italia Start in Bulgaria

Gianlorenzo Blengini, the head coach of the Bulgarian men’s national volleyball team, has encouraged the public to attend the first three stages of the Giro d’Italia, which is scheduled to pass through Bulgaria for the first time. The prestigious race begins on May 8 in Nessebar, traversing Burgas, Veliko Tarnovo, and Plovdiv before concluding in Sofia on May 10, after which it continues in Italy. In an interview, Blengini urged people to watch the event live, stating that the experience is unique.

“There are things in life that are never repeated… If you’ve never been there in person and have only watched on TV, you will realize how different it is,” the coach remarked. He added that for Italy, the Giro is an exceptionally important sporting event, recognized globally for its history and iconic pink jersey, evoking memories of legends like Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali.

Blengini also shared that he has recently increased his cycling activity for fitness purposes, finding it beneficial for his knee and back. He noted that his team, currently training in Samokov, expects to follow the peloton during the third stage on May 10. For the coach and his players, witnessing the professional cyclists in person is a significant draw.

“Until you see it live, you can’t truly understand what it’s all about,” Blengini stated. He expressed anticipation for his team to observe the speed and endurance of the elite athletes up close. Blengini, who previously guided Bulgaria to a silver medal at the 2025 World Championship, emphasized the value of the local sporting event for the community.
