Gianlorenzo Blengini, the coach of the Bulgarian men’s national volleyball team, encouraged the public in Bulgaria to attend the initial stages of the Giro d’Italia, which is taking place in the country. The prestigious cycling race begins on May 8 in Nessebar, with the route passing through Burgas, Veliko Tarnovo, and Plovdiv before concluding in Sofia on May 10, after which the competition continues in Italy. In an interview, Blengini stated that witnessing the event live is a unique experience.
He noted that while viewing the race on television is possible, the atmosphere and scale of the event in person are distinct. Furthermore, the coach emphasized the Giro’s deep cultural significance for Italy, describing it as a major national sporting event recognized globally, symbolized by its iconic pink jersey. Blengini, who has recently increased his personal cycling activity to maintain fitness without stressing his knee and back, also detailed the team’s plans.
As the volleyball squad trains in Samokov, they anticipate observing the Giro peloton passing through the town during the third stage on May 10. The Italian coach expressed interest in the team experiencing the professional level of the race firsthand. He remarked that seeing the elite athletes’ speed and endurance up close offers a unique perspective.
Blengini, who previously guided the national team to silver at the 2025 World Championship, added that the opportunity to watch the event in Samokov provides an interesting connection to the sport.
