Commemorative Assembly Marking 150th Anniversary of April Uprising to Be Held in Sofia

A national commemorative assembly marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising is scheduled to take place at the Prof. Marin Drinov Hall of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) on Monday. The event is held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova.

The day’s observances begin at 10:00 am in Sofia, where Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia, Daniil, will officiate a memorial prayer service for the victims of the Uprising at St Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral. Following the service, representatives from the academic community will participate in a procession led by President Iotova and Patriarch Daniil to the BAS building. The national commemorative assembly will officially open with remarks from BAS President Evelina Slavcheva, followed by a blessing from Patriarch Daniil and an address from Sofia University Rector, Prof.

Georgi Valchev. A central element of the program will be a keynote report presented by Academician Ivan Ilchev, titled “The Uprising That Returned Bulgaria to the Map of Europe.” President Iotova will also deliver a welcoming speech. The proceedings are hosted by Corresponding Member Atanas Semov of the Assembly of Academicians and Corresponding Members of BAS.

The initiative for this large-scale commemoration was spearheaded by the Assembly of Academicians and Corresponding Members, alongside the leadership of BAS, which established a National Initiative Committee. To support the observance, BAS also issued a national calendar of events for all participants and organizers.
