Community Centres Have Bright Future, President Says

President Iliana Iotova stated that the Bulgarian community centre, a facility with a 170-year history, maintains a promising future in the 21st century. Her comments were made during a meeting with the National Representative Committee marking the 170th anniversary of the national community centres. According to the Presidential press service on Thursday, Iotova noted that these community centres played a role in the formation of the Bulgarian community long before the reestablishment of the Bulgarian State.

The meeting, attended by Committee Chair Prof. Nikolay Doynov, other committee members, and representatives from local and national authorities, focused on several key areas. Discussions addressed the need for measures concerning the financing of public community centres, alongside the conservation and renovation of the associated building funds.

Participants reviewed the legal framework governing the operation of these centres and expressed a desire among Bulgarian communities abroad to establish new public community centres. Currently, only a branch of the Prosveta 1870 National Community Centre in Svilengrad, Southern Bulgaria, exists in Edirne. Iotova emphasized that the further development of Bulgarian community centres should be a priority for all national institutions.

Attendees expressed hope that the National Assembly and the incoming government would prioritize cultural policies. Committee representatives commended the President for her consistent support of the community centres’ initiatives. The meeting also covered organizational details for the anniversary celebrations, with Iotova confirming the full support of the Presidential institution for the planned events.
