Dance Groups from Essen and Krefeld to Perform Jointly in Munich

The dance groups “Shevitsa” from Essen, Germany, and “Mila Rodina” from Krefeld, Germany, will collaborate for their first joint performance at the 11th Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival. This event is scheduled to take place from May 15 to 17 at the BMW Park in Munich. The two ensembles are uniting to showcase their shared passion for Bulgarian folklore and to promote Bulgarian culture internationally, according to their leader, Ivandzhelin Ivanova.

Their joint performance will feature the dance “Shopska Zakachka” (“Shopi tease”), a piece choreographed by Iliya Petkov. This choreography draws inspiration from the traditional dances of the Shopluk folklore region, aiming to recreate the spirited and playful atmosphere of village celebrations. The performing group comprises 22 dancers, whose ages range from 14 to over 60.

Several members of the group were born or raised in Germany but maintain significant cultural ties to Bulgaria. Preparation for the festival has involved intensive rehearsals conducted several times a week, alongside the creation of specialized costumes and accessories. The traveling festival itself convenes amateur Bulgarian folklore groups from around the world and has been held in various European cities since its inception in 2015.
