Dechev: “Old Cops Are Using Dirty Tricks to Neutralize Interior Ministry’s Secretary General”

Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev accused elements within the police force of employing tactics to undermine Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. Earlier, Kandev issued a video message stating that he faced pressure to resign due to false testimony being presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov echoed concerns about the situation, describing the actions as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov asserted that a conspiracy against the Secretary General was initiated after the government successfully halted attacks on democracy and recovered millions of euros intended to undermine elections.

Minister Dechev publicly expressed his support for Kandev, stating his confidence in his integrity and noting that the future interior minister would inherit the responsibility of addressing the ensuing scandal. Dechev highlighted the recent achievements of the caretaker Government and the Interior Ministry, claiming they demonstrated a strong commitment to minimizing electoral crimes. According to Dechev, this reduction in malpractice was achieved through significant effort and resolve.

He characterized the struggle as a defense against forces attempting to undermine the will of the Bulgarian electorate during elections, alleging that the opposition has powerful allies within the judiciary. The statements detail escalating political tensions surrounding leadership within the Ministry of the Interior.
