Director General: Pencho Slaveykov Exemplifies Ideal Modern Person

During the launch of a national initiative marking the 160th anniversary of poet Pencho Slaveykov in Tryavna on Monday, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev presented a model for modern citizenship: an openness to new ideas. Valchev stated that the project aims to preserve the poet’s memory by engaging all 33 BTA national press clubs. These events will host discussions involving scholars, students, journalists, and public figures.

Furthermore, a special edition of BTA’s LIK magazine will document these conversations, continuing a tradition established with honoring Bulgarian writer Aleko Konstantinov. Valchev noted that Slaveykov was a central figure in Bulgarian modernism and the Misul literary circle, advocating for modernization through education and global awareness, an influence stemming from his studies in Leipzig. The planned discussions will explore contemporary definitions of modernity, paralleling past efforts that analyzed Konstantinov’s characters as reflections of national traits.

According to Valchev, Slaveykov exemplified modernity by embracing novel concepts while pursuing spiritual development and universal values, all without abandoning national identity or tradition. The Director General added that Slaveykov’s life and work were shaped by his father, Petko Slaveykov, and Bulgaria’s liberation struggles, as seen in his unfinished epic, Karvava Pesen. Valchev also recalled that Slaveykov was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1912.

The initiative, Valchev noted, demonstrates Bulgaria’s capacity to honor cultural leaders continuously, extending beyond mere anniversaries. Pencho Slaveykov (1866–1912) developed both lyrical poetry and socio-critical works, famously opposing the rule of Stefan Stambolov, while his early life was marked by physical impairments that shaped his creative outlook.
