Director General: Pencho Slaveykov Exemplifies Ideal Modern Person

At the launch of a national initiative commemorating the 160th anniversary of poet Pencho Slaveykov in Tryavna on Monday, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev presented a model of modern citizenship: one characterized by openness to new ideas. Valchev stated that the project is designed to maintain the memory of the poet across all 33 BTA national press clubs. The discussions will involve scholars, students, writers, journalists, and public figures, with the resulting conversations to be featured in a special issue of BTA’s LIK magazine.

Valchev noted that the initiative continues a tradition of honoring Bulgarian literary figures, similar to past tributes dedicated to Aleko Konstantinov. He highlighted that Slaveykov, a prominent modernist and member of the Misul literary circle, advocated for modernization through education and global awareness, influenced by his studies in Leipzig. The discussions aim to define contemporary modernity, drawing parallels to how past events examined Konstantinov’s characters as reflections of national traits.

According to Valchev, Slaveykov demonstrated that modernity requires embracing new ideas and pursuing spiritual growth and universal values without rejecting national identity or tradition. Slaveykov’s life was shaped by his father, Petko Slaveykov, and Bulgaria’s liberation struggles, themes evident in his work, such as the unfinished epic Karvava Pesen. The poet, who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1912, experienced significant physical impairments early in life, which he later viewed as a catalyst for his creative outlook.

Influenced by thinkers like Nietzsche and Heine, he developed both lyrical poetry and socio-critical pieces,
