The novel Time Shelter has been released in the Japanese book market, according to announcements from its author, Georgi Gospodinov. Gospodinov stated on Facebook, “I am happy to share that in April Time Shelter was published in Japan by the Kayakawa publishing house in Tokyo.” He further noted that, based on reviews, this marks the first Bulgarian novel published in Japan since 1989, representing a significant milestone for Bulgarian literature in the country. Currently, the novel ranks among the top five best-selling foreign publications in Japan, according to Amazon data.
In a separate post, Gospodinov added a lighthearted comment regarding the novel’s characters, stating, “Gaustin speaks Japanese. And he arrived in Japan before me – we will settle this.” He acknowledged that the Japanese translation was completed by Kenji Terashima. While Time Shelter marks a notable literary presence, Gospodinov’s works have achieved translation into numerous languages globally, including English, German, Polish, Dutch, Croatian, Spanish, Norwegian, Swedish, Chinese, Arabic, and Brazilian Portuguese.
