A team comprising geologists and engineers inspected a section of the third-class road (III-8641) connecting Smolyan and Pamporovo, which has been severely impacted by a massive landslide. Marin Kushev, the director of the regional road authority in Smolyan, confirmed that the group assessed options for immediate stabilization and the construction of a temporary bypass to restore traffic flow until a permanent solution can be designed. The working group, which included engineer Kalin Kalchev and representatives from the road maintenance company, conducted the on-site evaluation.
Kushev stated that after reviewing all available alternatives, the only currently viable option is utilizing an existing road that passes above the area affected by the landslide. Authorities will inspect properties along this route to analyze the feasibility of widening the path and creating temporary passing points to accommodate vehicular traffic. Kushev indicated that a definitive determination regarding this route’s use as a temporary bypass is anticipated at the start of next week.
While preliminary observations suggest the terrain is in relatively stable condition, a final assessment is still pending. The estimated length for this potential temporary bypass is approximately one and a half kilometers. The group also evaluated an alternative route situated below the landslide, along a forest road; however, this option has also been rendered unusable due to the displaced earth masses.
Experts noted that the scale of the landslide is extensive, complicating efforts to implement quick fixes. Efforts to determine the quickest method to restore access to the road continue, with the focus remaining on the temporary bypass near Pamporovo.
