Inspect Landslide near Pamporovo, Consider Temporary Bypass Road

Geologists and engineers inspected a section of the third-class road (III-8641) linking Smolyan and Pamporovo, which has been impacted by a major landslide. Marin Kushev, director of the regional road authority in Smolyan, reported that the working group assessed options for temporary stabilization and the construction of a bypass to restore traffic flow pending a permanent solution. The inspection team included engineer Kalin Kalchev and representatives from the road maintenance company.

Kushev stated that after reviewing all available options, the most feasible immediate measure is utilizing an existing road that passes above the area affected by the landslide. Authorities plan to inspect nearby properties to analyze possibilities for widening the route or creating temporary passing points to accommodate traffic. Kushev indicated that a determination regarding the viability of this temporary bypass is anticipated by the beginning of next week.

While the team also examined an alternative forest road situated below the landslide, it was found to be unusable due to earth displacement. Experts noted that the landslide is extensive, complicating rapid restoration efforts on the primary road. Although preliminary observations suggest the terrain is stable with no visible active deformation, a final assessment remains pending.

The estimated length for the potential temporary bypass is approximately one and a half kilometers. Efforts to determine the best course of action to restore the critical road connection between Smolyan and Pamporovo continue.
