Inspect Landslide near Pamporovo, Consider Temporary Bypass Road

A team of geologists and engineers conducted an inspection of the third-class road, III-8641, connecting Smolyan and Pamporovo, which has been severely impacted by a massive landslide. Marin Kushev, director of the regional road authority in Smolyan, confirmed that the working group assessed options for both temporary stabilization and the construction of a bypass road to restore traffic flow while a permanent solution is designed. The inspection included engineer Kalin Kalchev and representatives from the road maintenance company.

Kushev stated that after reviewing all available options, the most viable immediate path is an existing road that runs above the affected landslide zone. Authorities plan to inspect properties along this route to analyze the feasibility of widening the path and establishing temporary passing points to accommodate traffic. A determination regarding the use of this route as a temporary bypass is anticipated by the start of next week.

While preliminary observations suggest the terrain is in relatively stable condition, a final assessment remains pending. The estimated length of this potential temporary bypass is approximately one and a half kilometers. Experts also evaluated an alternative route below the landslide, utilizing a forest road; however, this option is currently unusable due to earth displacement.

Due to the extensive nature of the landslide, implementing quick fixes presents significant challenges. Work continues across multiple fronts to analyze all options necessary to restore the crucial road link between Smolyan and Pamporovo.
