Iotova: Legislature Should Prioritize Budget Adoption

Addressing the newly sworn-in members of the 52nd National Assembly, Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova emphasized that the primary duty of the legislature must be the passage of the 2026 national budget. She characterized the previous extension of the 2025 budget as a “serious manifestation of impasse.” According to Iotova, any further delay threatens stagnation and unpredictability for Bulgarian citizens, businesses, municipalities, and state institutions. The President stressed that rebuilding public trust in Bulgarian institutions will be a difficult, long-term endeavor requiring concerted efforts across all branches of government.

Iotova noted that the electorate had mandated a single political force, Progressive Bulgaria, with expectations of stable governance, strict adherence to the separation of powers outlined in the Constitution, and vigorous action against corruption. Shifting focus to the international stage, Iotova urged Bulgaria to adopt a more assertive role within the European Union. She argued that after nineteen years of EU membership, Bulgaria’s perspective is valuable and must be heard.

She asserted that the nation has significant contributions to offer regarding the security of the EU’s external borders and the development of the Western Balkans. Iotova concluded that for Europe to regain its international leadership and maintain high standards for its citizens, it requires the active and influential voice of every member state, including Bulgaria.
