Iotova: Legislature Should Prioritize Budget Adoption

Addressing the newly constituted 52nd National Assembly on Thursday, Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova emphasized that a primary responsibility of the legislature is passing the 2026 national budget. She characterized the extension of the 2025 budget as evidence of a prolonged governmental impasse. According to the head of state, any delay in budgetary action risks stagnation and unpredictability for citizens, businesses, municipalities, and state institutions.

President Iotova stated that restoring public confidence in Bulgarian institutions will be a complex, multi-faceted effort requiring cooperation across all branches of government. She noted that the electorate had given its mandate to Progressive Bulgaria with expectations of stable governance, adherence to the separation of powers outlined in the Constitution, and robust action against corruption. In her address, Iotova also addressed Bulgaria’s role within the European Union.

She argued that Bulgaria must adopt a more assertive stance within the EU framework. She asserted that Bulgaria’s perspective is valuable and holds weight equivalent to that of all 27 member states. Furthermore, she highlighted Bulgaria’s potential contributions to EU security, particularly concerning the external borders and its capacity to serve as an economic hub for the future, urging the nation to amplify its voice on the international stage.
