Iotova to Hold Consultations with Parliamentary Groups Tuesday

President Iliana Iotova is scheduled to conduct a series of consultations with the major parliamentary groups on May 5th. According to the President’s press secretariat, these meetings are mandated by the Constitution, following which the President will assign the Prime Minister-designate proposed by the largest parliamentary bloc to form the government. The consultation process will begin with Progressive Bulgaria, which currently holds the largest representation with 131 seats in the 240-seat Parliament.

Following this initial meeting, President Iotova will meet sequentially with the leaders of the remaining five political factions: GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane. These scheduled consultations are a key step in the post-election governmental formation process. The timing follows the swearing-in of Members of Parliament on April 30th, during which Mihaela Dotsova, a member of Progressive Bulgaria, was elected as the Chair of the National Assembly.

After concluding the discussions with all the respective parliamentary groups, President Iotova is expected to address the media to provide a statement summarizing the outcomes of the consultations and detailing the next steps for forming the government. The process underscores the constitutional role of the presidency in mediating the formation of the executive branch following the legislative elections.
