President Iliana Iotova is scheduled to conduct a series of consultations with the six major parliamentary groups on May 5, according to a statement issued by the President’s press secretariat on Monday. The meetings are part of a constitutional process that dictates the formation of a new government. Following these discussions, President Iotova is mandated to assign the Prime Minister-designate proposed by the largest political bloc within the 240-seat Parliament.
The consultation schedule begins with the largest group, Progressive Bulgaria, which holds 131 seats. Subsequently, Iotova will meet sequentially with representatives from GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane. Upon concluding these discussions with all the respective factions, the President will issue a formal statement to the press.
These proceedings take place against the backdrop of recent political developments. Members of Parliament were sworn into office on April 30, an event which also saw the election of Mihaela Dotsova, a member of Progressive Bulgaria, to the role of National Assembly Chair. The structured consultations are designed to facilitate the transition to a governing cabinet, adhering strictly to established parliamentary protocols.
The outcome of these meetings will guide the next steps in the government formation process.
