Iotova to Hold Consultations with Parliamentary Groups Tuesday

President Iliana Iotova is scheduled to conduct a series of high-level consultations with the six parliamentary groups on May 5, according to the President’s press secretariat on Monday. These meetings are a crucial step in the nation’s governmental formation process, dictated by the Constitution. Following these consultations, President Iotova is constitutionally mandated to appoint the Prime Minister-designate, who will be put forward by the largest parliamentary bloc to form the new government.

The schedule for the consultations begins with the largest parliamentary group, Progressive Bulgaria, which currently holds 131 seats within the 240-seat Parliament. Subsequently, Iotova will meet sequentially with the leaderships of GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane. The formal proceedings for the current parliamentary term commenced with the swearing-in of Members of Parliament on April 30.

During that session, Mihaela Dotsova, a member of Progressive Bulgaria, was elected as the Chair of the National Assembly. After concluding her discussions with all the major political factions, President Iotova is expected to address the media to provide an official statement regarding the outcomes of the consultations and the path forward for forming the government. The sequence of these meetings underscores the constitutional mechanisms required to establish the executive branch following the recent parliamentary elections.
