President Iliana Iotova is scheduled to conduct a series of consultations with the six major parliamentary groups on May 5. According to the President’s press secretariat, these meetings are a critical step in the constitutional process for forming a new government. Following these consultations, the President is constitutionally obligated to assign the role of Prime Minister-designate to the candidate put forward by the largest parliamentary group.
The schedule for the meetings begins with Progressive Bulgaria, which currently holds the largest representation with 131 seats in the 240-seat Parliament. Subsequently, President Iotova will meet with the leadership of the remaining parliamentary factions: GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane. After concluding the series of consultations, President Iotova is set to address the media to provide an official statement regarding the proceedings.
The timing of these events follows the recent swearing-in of the Members of Parliament on April 30. During that session, the parliamentary body elected Mihaela Dotsova, a member of Progressive Bulgaria, to serve as the Chair of the National Assembly. These upcoming consultations represent the formal mechanism through which the government formation process will advance, guiding the selection of the next Prime Minister-designate based on the mandate received from the various parliamentary blocs.
