President Iliana Iotova is scheduled to conduct a series of consultations with the six distinct parliamentary groups on May 5, according to a statement released by the President’s press secretariat on Monday. Under the existing constitutional framework, these meetings are a critical step preceding the appointment of a new government. Following the conclusion of these discussions, President Iotova will be responsible for formally designating the Prime Minister-designate, a role which will be filled by the candidate proposed by the largest political faction.
The sequence of meetings is structured to begin with the most represented group. Iotova will first meet with Progressive Bulgaria, which currently holds 131 seats within the 240-seat Parliament. Subsequently, the presidential schedule includes meetings with the representatives of GERB-UDF, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane.
Following the completion of all scheduled consultations, President Iotova has committed to addressing the media to provide an official statement regarding the outcomes and next steps. This procedural activity takes place in the context of the newly constituted legislative body, as Members of Parliament were officially sworn in on April 30. During those proceedings, Mihaela Dotsova, representing Progressive Bulgaria, was elected as the Chair of the National Assembly.
The presidential consultations thus represent the formal mechanism through which the government formation process is advanced.
