Vijay Joshi, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of India’s national news agency Press Trust of India (PTI), visited the Slaveykov House Museum in Tryavna to attend the launch of the Bulgarian News Agency’s (BTA) initiative, “Pencho Slaveykov Today.” This event commemorates the 160th birth anniversary of the poet Pencho Slaveykov, a significant figure in Bulgarian modernism. During the visit, Joshi suggested that India could draw inspiration from the methods BTA employs in partnering with local communities to preserve and promote Bulgarian culture. He expressed optimism that the collaboration between the national news agencies of India and BTA would help increase awareness of Slaveykov’s work within India.
Joshi stated that such cultural events are vital for preserving a nation’s heritage. His trip marked his second visit to Bulgaria, where he praised Tryavna as a charming old town. Following the commemorative meeting, Joshi, along with BTA Director General Kiril Valchev and Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev, toured the Daskalov House and the Museum of Asian and African Art.
The professional relationship between PTI and BTA is supported by an agreement facilitating news exchange. Furthermore, both agencies participate in MINDS International, an association comprising 25 global news agencies, which focuses on advancing information services. Joshi’s visit followed participation in the MINDS conference in Vienna and included stops at BTA’s national press clubs in Belgrade and Skopje, underscoring the growing cooperation between global news organizations.

It would be interesting to see how India adapts BTA’s model for promoting its own cultural heritage.
